How to Get That Internet Advantage
Published on March 28, 2004 By Larry Kuperman In Blogging
For the past couple of weeks, I have been using MyIE2 as my browser. It really is an add-on to Internet Explorer that allows you to open multiple web pages in the same Window. They show as tabs at the top.

Installation is trivial and you will find that all you Favorites have been imported from Internet Explorer.

If you have read any of my blogs, you know that I tend to quote a lot of internet sources. Having the pages all available in one Window is less memory intensive and having them as tabs makes it easier to find the one that I want. It also has ad blocking, is skinnable, lots more. There are also a lot of plug ins available that extend its functionality even more.

Two plugins that I use are the Google Toolbar and IESpell. The Google Toolbar is available from http://www.google.com (duh!) and IESpell from...you guessed it....http://www.iespell.com/ If you want to use these with MyIE2, then go to Options from within MyIE2, select MyIE2 options and at the bottom of the options list you will see IE plugins. Pick what you want. (MyIE2 also has a search bar built-in, if you want to use Google instead, deselect the other one.)

IESpell is a spell-checker for internet posts. Now where might one use THAT feature? With MyIE2, you select the text to check with your mouse and right click. You will see the option there.

A fourth tool that is useful, though not related to blogging necessarily, is RoboForm. It is a password manager, kind of like what Gator might have been if Gator wasn't Scumware............but that was an earlier post.

All these tools are free, but I do encourage you to donate to support the authors.

MyIE2 is an addon to an unstable web browser.

Use Firebird... it supports nearly every webpage out there (no guessing if it will work - it just does), automatically blocks popups, has a google toolbar for quick internet searches, and supports plugins for removing ads, mouse gesturing, etc. It's cross platform, so if you want to move to Mac or to Linux then you can just download a version of Firebird for that OS. Sure, it's not for everyone but if you haven't tried it then give it a go.

I really recommend moving beyond addons for IE like MyIE2 and AvantBrowser, et all. If you're happy and have tried the alternatives, then it's ok - if not then Firebird might be for you.

I agree, Firebird seems a better option, its not a latch on, its a standalone, and an established on at that!

I have used it and that tab function rocks.

You can also use the mozilla engine (gecko) with MyIE2.

Get the mozilla activeX engine here: Link. Install it. Then check "Use gecko Engine" in the File->New Page menu of MyIE2.

Or just get the full Mozilla browser from http://www.mozilla.org.
FireBird is now called FireFox, by the way. (And it's also available from mozilla.org.)
