US Aids Iranian Earthquake Victims

The United States has rushed to the aid of earthquake victims in Iran. While we may end up at war with the government of Iran in the near future, I think that it shows the humanity of Americans that we have rushed to help the Iranian people.

The death toll after the recent earthquake in the city of Bam now stands at 28,000. Without food, blankets and medical supplies, more people would have died. So far, the United States has rushed over 168.5 tons of supplies to the region.

Now the US is only one of over 21 countries that is participating in the humanitarian aid effort. But we are the only participating country whose embassy staff was taken hostage and held prisoner for over a year. I am proud that our President has the maturity to understand that the Iranian people are not to blame for the actions of their government.

I doubted that whatever the US does will have a major impact on world opinion. However, I checked out how Al Jazeera, for example, is reporting this story and I found their coverage pretty fair: http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/005905F3-40CF-4A8C-B2F0-DEE63BD84244.htm

It is interesting to note that US-based CNN indicates that the US is the largest contributor, while Al Jazeera does not address this. Oh well, progress anyway.

I don't think that we will end up at war with Iran. I think they will much like Lybia, begin to cooperate. GCJ
